Just 45 minutes to the South of San Jose, lies Finca Cerro Paldo in the district of Aserra, Tarbaca, a microregion of the popular coffee region of Tarrazu.
The farm is located at 5,570 ft. (1750m) above sea level, an altitude at which the sun rays boost the bean´s density and make it an extremely solid Strictly Hard Bean.
Cerro Paldo is owned by Ronald Monge Valverde, the third generation of coffee producers in the family. His grandfather Adam Monge Castro bought 2 hectares of land more than 60 years ago and began such a legacy of tradition.
Ronald´s father, Juan Rafael Monge Picado inherited the farm afterwards and then passed in on to his son.
Currently 10 people live in the farm and are devoted to produce high quality coffee.
The Monge Valverde family is a member of the Asociacion Agropecuaria de Productores de Acosta y Aserra (ASOPROAAA), a producer association established 3 years ago to work together with the objective of adding value to their products by establishing strict quality standards on coffee production and processing.
They also diversified their farming practices by working together, now they count on an additional income by selling other agronomical products like citric fruits, avocado and cattle.
It has not been easy for ASOPROAAA, the initial investment to build a mill was challenging and demanded a lot of hard work but all the efforts paid off when Finca Cerro Paldo won first place in the 2007 Costa Rica Cup of Excellence.
The Family Monge Valverde is a family with great coffee tradition, and has transferred their knowledge from generation to generation.
Through their determination and devotion they have improved the good practices within the coffee plantation, and optimized therefore the life utility of their coffee plants.
In addition, the excellence required to process mature fruit has been the key to obtain a high quality cup. On the other hand, the sustainable production system implemented the use of vegetal covers and organic matter, instead of using agrochemicals.
ASOPROAAA offers different alternatives to the associates like the processing and commercialization of their coffees, with the purpose of improving the quality of life of its members. ASOPROAAA also provides better prices on fertilizers through high volume purchases and advises its members on how to manage their business efficiently. ASOPROAAA has changed many lives in Aserra and Acosta like the Monge Valverde fanily, thanks to their hard work we can enjoy such an outstanding coffee as Cerro Paldo.
